Did you know?

In Australia…

  • 💦 1 in 4 people over the age of 15 years experience incontinence.
  • 💦 80% of people with urinary incontinence are women.
  • 💦 1 in 3 woman pee their pants.

Yet 70% of people who experience incontinence do NOT seek help. Most simply suffer in shame and silence.

Incontinence is only one presentation of Pelvic Floor Dysfunction (PFD).

PFD can also present has Pelvic Organ Prolapse (POP), pelvic pain, sexual dysfunction, constipation and more.

Not only does PFD come with awful symptoms, it carries a high emotional toll, is costly to manage, it also ruins your singing because your Pelvic Floor is a key part of your Breath Support!

The good news is Pelvic Floor Dysfunction is highly treatable.

Pelvic Floor Muscle Training (PFMT) is the gold standard, first-line treatment for PFD at any age. It has Level 1, Grade A evidence in the prevention and management of Pelvic Floor Dysfunction with 50 to 80% success rate.

That’s fancy science talk for highly effective for both Prevention and Treatment of PFD.

No other musculoskeletal condition has such impressive bragging rights!

As with all health conditions, Early Detection is key to getting timely treatment and better outcome, which is why we screen for lots of conditions such as cancer, diabetes, heart disease, osteoporosis, etc.

Now we can also screen for Pelvic Floor Dysfunction.

In 2010, I was invited to give a workshop at the inaugural Australian Summer Pole Camp. The event ran crazy behind so my 20-minute presentation was cut down to a crash course on what the pelvic floor is, what it does, and how to contract your pelvic floor muscles.

That night at the Welcome Party, three young women came up to me and thanked me for this amazing gift I was giving women.

I couldn’t believe it! The tiny crumbs in my 5-minute presentation were an amazing gift! 🤯

It shook me to my core and gave me the first glimpse of how dire a problem PFD is.

When I started my Voice Physio account on Instagram in 2016, I soon started seeing posts that teach singers to push down on their pelvic floor for breath support, which is something we physiotherapists know damages the pelvic floor and contributes to Pelvic Floor Dysfunction!

That’s when I knew the problem is far worse than I ever imagined and that I had to do something to help singers prevent PFD.

This is precisely what our Pelvic Floor Dysfunction (PFD) Screening is all about.

“It is every human’s birthright to have a Confident, Competent, Functional Pelvic Floor all through their life.

Who Should Consider Screening?

Here’re some examples:

❗️ You get that scary “Oops, I almost peed my pants!” sensation when you sneeze, cough, and sing, especially when you sing high or belt.

❗️ You have to Power Pee (force pee out) or else you can’t pee freely.

❗️ You’ve been taught to push down on your pelvic floor for Breath Support when you sing and you have been singing this way for more than 3 months.

❗️ You struggle with chronic, excessive vocal tension that can only be temporarily relieved and invariably comes back.

❗️ You have a high vocal load.

❗️ You have a chronic cough.

❗️ You habitually suck your stomach in to make your belly look flat.

❗️You have hypermobility.

❗️ You experience anxiety and have tendencies to squeeze and clench.

❗️ You have had children and you leaked during your pregnancy.

❗️ You don’t want to pee your pants when you get older.

❗️ You are unsure and want to find out if you’re at risk.
